Darkness may close in at every turn of the album, but there is hope to be found in small, but promising ways. The search for belongingness has been the focal point for Hawak’s debut album, nuoc. Effervescent and buoyant, this project will shuffle your feet amidst a rainy day. Even when these tracks flow over 5+ minutes long, there is a sense of stability and replayability in the repetition and grooves that keep the splashy tunes wash over you. Each track flows together with a light-foot grace as the quicker rhythms, sliced vocal samples, and sweet singing loop around to keep you dancing around in your seats.

Janlor EncarnacionĬathy Hobi’s debut EP provides the rainy scenery with some well-needed bubbles and sparkles with her UK Garage sensibilities. Diverging from the fun and cheerful sound of his older projects, the self-titled debut takes on darker tones and melodies similar to Narcloudia’s take on the genre, only to be complimented well by Connie’s dreamy vocals. Pinoy indie pop stalwart Dale Marquez’s new band The Summer Triangle is an exploration of dream pop and its atmospheric depths. It’s a refreshing maintenance of form for The Buildings, as they take fascinating turns to shake up their existing formula of debauchery. Tracks like “Doghouse” and “Detour” show the band’s willful deviation from milquetoast indie rock, alongside barn-burners like “Caricatures” and “Phantom Limb”. This new release sees the band hit a gray area of maturity, as the songs ooze a more confident and refined form of rambunctiousness, not unlike their peers and bar show patrons. While some of these songs have been around since 2017 (“Room So Small”), it’s nice to finally see these songs in a complete bundle–with the band filling the tracklist with more complex things to say compared to the last effort.

Quezon City miscreants The Buildings come back with their sophomore album Heaven is a Long Exhale, a full five years after their debut effort Cell-O-Phane. I never thought I would ever have the pleasure of hearing Touareg melodies intertwine with whispered autotune until hearing this. The album serves as a starkly (dare I say) authentic product of counter-culture, with paso de blas flipping, dissecting, and defenestrating synth-pop and indie rock tropes in manners that border the absolute and inane. The heart of this project is absurdity, and it beats in strange rhythms. every step in the right direction crumples together every satirical aspect of over-education in song form, and it has no right to be as fun as it is. Paso De Blas – Every Step in the Right Directionįor such an oddball, paso de blas holds such a straight-laced approach to experimentation. The duo also explore their more intimate and experimental side but return the listener to what made them popular in the first place. With guest producers in tow, the beats compliment the hard-hitting and occasional tongue-in-cheek political and social commentary.
